Creating an event on Eventbrite, step by step

Updated 2026-07-26UK-specific

Eventbrite's builder is genuinely easy — the setup takes twenty minutes. The decisions inside it (fee passing, payout timing, plan upsells) are where money moves, so here's the walkthrough with the cost notes the wizard doesn't show.

The build

  1. Create the organiser account, verify email, complete payout details (bank account; payouts arrive 4–5 working days after the event — plan cash flow accordingly).
  2. 'Create event' → title, date/time, venue (or online), images. The banner crops to ~2160×1080; test on mobile.
  3. Add ticket types: name, quantity, price, sales window per type. Free tickets carry no Eventbrite fees; paid UK tickets carry 6.95% + £0.59 each.
  4. The fee decision: pass fees to buyers (default — your £15 ticket checks out at £17.06) or absorb them (you receive £13.41). See the analysis before accepting the default.
  5. Publish. Decline the Eventbrite Ads and 'Pro' upsells until you have evidence you need them — they're recurring costs on top of per-ticket fees.

Settings worth changing from default

  • Order form: collect the marketing opt-in (unticked) — the list is yours to export; take it.
  • Refund policy: set one explicitly; 'no policy' reads as 'no refunds' to fans and invites disputes.
  • Privacy: unlisted events exist for presales and private sales.

What it costs at your numbers

Figures computed from each platform's stated rate (2026-07-26 data review). Where a rate excludes VAT it is shown grossed-up at 20%. Card processing paid to Stripe/PayPal applies similarly on most platforms and is excluded. Quote-only platforms can't be computed — their rates are negotiated.

If most of your audience arrives via your own channels rather than Eventbrite's discovery, that fee line is paying for software you can get for a fraction — the standing question with every marketplace platform.

Questions people ask

Is Eventbrite free for free events?

Yes — free tickets attract no Eventbrite fees, which keeps it a reasonable choice for free registration events within its feature set.

When does Eventbrite pay out UK organisers?

Typically 4–5 working days after the event completes. If you need sales revenue before the event (deposits, artists), that timing is a structural problem — platforms settling via your own Stripe pay as you sell.

Can I move my event off Eventbrite later?

Yes — export attendees, recreate on the new platform, redirect links. Do it between events, not mid-sale; and check your new platform imports your list with consent status intact.
